Geely Auto has officially announced the expansion of its primary brand into the Canadian market. The company is currently establishing local operations and developing a retail and service network, with the first vehicle models expected to arrive in 2027.
The expansion follows a trade agreement reached in January between Canada and China, which allows for the import of up to 49 000 Chinese-made electric vehicles annually at a 6.1% tariff rate. This policy shift creates a pathway for Chinese manufacturers following the implementation of a 100% additional tariff in October 2024.
Geely has not yet disclosed specific details regarding its initial product lineup, powertrain options, or pricing for the Canadian market. The company plans to release further information as launch preparations progress, emphasizing a long-term commitment through local partnerships.
The company's international strategy is gaining momentum as domestic sales face challenges. In the first nine months of the year, Geely Auto exported 797 670 vehicles, marking a 169% increase compared to the previous year, while sales within China declined by 23.28%.
