The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a two-year investment of over $1 billion to promote AI equity. This initiative accounts for approximately 11% of the organization's current annual budget of $9 billion.

The funding is allocated as follows: 40% for education, including AI tutoring systems, and 40% for healthcare diagnostics and clinical support. The remaining 20% is divided between agricultural innovations and digital infrastructure for underserved languages.

The foundation has launched a $50 million pilot program with OpenAI to integrate AI into primary healthcare clinics in Africa. Anthropic is also confirmed as a collaborator on the project.

CEO Mark Suzman characterized this commitment as a down payment, suggesting that further funding rounds may follow. Bill Gates noted that the next 12 to 18 months are critical for determining the global impact of AI on inequality.
