Tom Lee, head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors, identified a buying opportunity in the wake of Friday's stock market decline. He categorizes cryptocurrencies, memory stocks, semiconductor companies, and AI cloud providers as assets that have reached technical support levels. According to Lee, these price zones have historically attracted buyers, despite current market fears regarding AI fundamentals.
Mark Newton, a technical strategist at Fundstrat, suggests that the market could see a bottom between Friday and Monday, potentially leading to a rally. Lee maintains that the underlying drivers for the AI sector remain strong, even as concerns about AI debt markets persist. The Cboe Volatility Index, often referred to as Wall Street's fear gauge, experienced a sharp increase during the selloff.
Other analysts offer varying perspectives on the current market environment. Dan Greenhaus of Solus Alternative Asset Management points to high interest rates as a source of pressure on speculative AI infrastructure, such as CoreWeave. Meanwhile, Ed Clissold from Ned Davis Research notes that the market is currently adjusting to the cost of capital, which could lead to a slowdown in infrastructure build-out.
Despite these concerns, demand for AI-related hardware remains robust, with companies like ASML and TSMC reporting strong interest. Analysts are now looking toward third-quarter earnings reports, expected in a few weeks, for further clarity. The S&P 500 saw 32% profit growth last quarter, exceeding the initial 25% expectation, with current projections for the next quarter set at 25% to 26%.
