Ford plans to launch its Fathom electric pickup in early 2027 with a starting price of $28,350. Despite the company's official confirmation that the timeline remains unchanged, CEO Jim Farley has acknowledged significant challenges in achieving mass production at the required scale and cost.

The automaker is developing the Universal Electric Vehicle platform to compete with Chinese manufacturers like BYD. Ford identified that BYD holds a 20 percent cost advantage regarding battery technology, prompting the company to redesign motors, gearboxes, and inverters to utilize smaller batteries.

Ford is investing $5 billion into its Louisville Assembly Plant and the BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan to support production. The company aims to sell 100,000 units of the Fathom in its first year, though industry reports suggest that ongoing production hurdles may complicate this goal.

The Fathom will feature a NACS charging port, bidirectional charging, and the BlueCruise driver-assistance system. It will also be the first Ford model to integrate Apple Maps directly into its navigation system, alongside wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.
