Florida Polytechnic University has acquired a Jetson One, an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, for its police department. The vehicle, which cost $148,000, is intended for search and rescue operations in remote areas and as a research platform for students.

The Jetson One weighs 86 kg and offers a maximum flight time of 20 minutes. Its top speed is capped at 102 kph to comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations for ultralight aircraft, which do not require traditional pilot licenses or airworthiness certificates.

Currently, the university faces regulatory hurdles as FAA Part 103 rules restrict ultralight craft to recreational use, prohibiting police patrols, night flights, and operations over congested areas. The institution is in the final stages of seeking an exemption from the FAA to begin official duties.

Jetson, the California-based manufacturer, fast-tracked the university's order, allowing it to bypass a three-year waiting list. CEO Stéphan D'haene stated that the company prioritized this project to demonstrate the utility of the technology beyond recreational purposes.
