In August 2026, the European electric vehicle market saw record growth, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reaching a 30% market share. Registrations of fully electric vehicles totaled approximately 250 000 units, marking a 51% increase year-over-year.

Plugin vehicle sales rose by 39% compared to the previous year, though plugin hybrids (PHEVs) grew by only 15% to 98 000 units. While European-made PHEVs saw limited growth, Chinese-made plugin hybrids surged by 141% this year, largely due to manufacturers leveraging a tariff loophole.

The Tesla Model Y returned to the top of the sales charts in August with 10 093 registrations. It was followed by the Skoda Elroq with 9 242 units and the BMW iX1/X1 PHEV twins with 8 390 registrations. The BYD Seal U and BMW iX3 rounded out the top five.

Chinese brands continue to expand their presence in Europe, with 15 manufacturers now appearing in the top 50. Notable growth was reported by brands such as Xpeng, which saw a 323% increase, Leapmotor with 222%, Jaecoo with 191%, and Omoda with 129%.
