Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, has proposed a 'bunker mode' strategy for the crypto industry. He warns that advancements in AI-driven mathematical reasoning could potentially compromise ECDSA signature schemes within months, rather than years. This timeline is significantly faster than previous industry expectations regarding quantum computing threats.
The core of the proposal involves migrating assets to new addresses where public keys have not yet been exposed through transactions. Drake suggests that large holders and critical infrastructure operators should prioritize this migration. He also recommends that these entities adopt frequent key rotation and implement hash-based multi-signing schemes, such as SPHINCS.
Drake specifically called on major industry players, including Binance, Bitfinex, and Tether, to lead these security measures. For Bitcoin, he pointed to Project11’s 'risq list' as a tool for identifying exposed public keys. He noted that wallets holding less than approximately 50 BTC currently have partial protection from these specific exposure risks.
The researcher emphasized that this is a precautionary measure under uncertainty rather than a confirmed crisis. While hash-based cryptography is already part of long-term discussions for the Ethereum roadmap, the market showed no immediate reaction to the warning. Challenges remain regarding the coordination required to move funds for millions of users.
