EQT Infrastructure is investing up to $2 billion to deploy 1 GW of distributed battery capacity across the United States. The project, managed by portfolio company Madison Energy Infrastructure, aims to alleviate grid connection bottlenecks for data centers by reducing local energy demand.

The initiative focuses on installing small-scale batteries with a 4-hour discharge duration at industrial and commercial sites, including wastewater treatment facilities. Deployment will begin in the PJM Interconnection territory, a 13-state grid region serving approximately 65 million people.

EQT acts as the sole equity investor, while Madison Energy Infrastructure seeks additional debt financing. The company plans to complete the 1 GW buildout by 2028. This effort will effectively double the firm's current distributed energy footprint, which is expected to exceed 1 GW by fall 2026.

The strategy integrates battery deployment with EQT's broader digital infrastructure portfolio, specifically the EdgeConneX data center platform. EQT previously acquired Copia Power and secured $2.4 billion from CPP Investments to support its data center growth, creating a vertically integrated energy and infrastructure model.
