Epic Games is shifting its development process for an unannounced Disney-themed shooter to an AI-first model. The project, which features characters from Marvel and Star Wars, will utilize tools like Anthropic’s Claude for coding and generative AI for art assets. Human developers will transition into roles focused on guiding, managing, and auditing the AI-generated output.
The shooter project, originally scheduled for release in March 2027, has been delayed indefinitely due to development progress falling behind expectations. Epic Games is implementing this strategy to address inefficiencies and improve production speed. CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed that the company is reorganizing teams to better leverage AI, aiming to increase individual output rather than reducing headcount.
The transition has sparked internal concerns among staff regarding quality control, the complexity of integrating AI code into existing systems, and the consistency of AI-generated art. Critics note that the time required to review, fix, and optimize AI output could potentially offset the time saved during the initial production phase.
This initiative serves as a test case for integrating AI into the broader Unreal Engine ecosystem. While Epic maintains that human developers remain the core drivers of creativity, the industry is closely watching whether this AI-centric workflow can successfully scale for large-scale commercial projects without compromising quality or increasing technical debt.
