EMVCo has concluded a public consultation on its proposed technical framework for agentic payments. The initiative aims to standardize how information regarding consumer-authorized intent and agent involvement is transmitted through card payment systems.

The framework introduces Intent Services, a shared layer allowing payment participants to register, reference, and manage authorization data throughout the transaction lifecycle. This system is designed to help issuers and networks verify whether a transaction aligns with the specific limits set by a consumer for an AI agent.

EMVCo is also exploring Know Your Agent capabilities and transaction indicators to provide transparency. These tools could assist in risk assessment, fraud prevention, and dispute resolution by identifying the agent and its delegated authority during the payment process.

The organization is currently reviewing feedback from the consultation, which ended on Sept. 30. Future updates may impact existing standards, including EMV 3-D Secure, payment tokenization, and secure remote commerce, to better support automated agent-based transactions.
