The German startup EDENenergy, founded by former researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, has developed a 70 kWh industrial energy storage system. The unit is built using 112 repurposed electric scooter batteries that were previously discarded.
The core innovation lies in the company's proprietary power electronics. This technology allows for the integration of batteries with different types, designs, and management systems into a single unit without the need for disassembly.
The system features a modular design, enabling the replacement of individual batteries without interrupting the entire installation. Remote monitoring tracks the state of each module, and units that reach the end of their service life are sent for recycling.
Initial tests revealed that the batteries retain over 90% of their original capacity, exceeding the developers' initial 80% estimate. The company projects the system will maintain its full capacity even after ten years of operation.
In mid-October, EDENenergy delivered its first unit to a commercial client operating a solar power plant. The startup currently focuses on medium-sized enterprises and plans to scale its industrial storage capacity to 300 kWh in the future.
