Isabel Schnabel, a key member of the European Central Bank Executive Board, will resign from her position in January 2027. She is set to join the International Monetary Fund as Financial Counsellor and Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department. Her departure occurs nearly a year before her original ECB term was scheduled to conclude.
This transition follows the resignation of Tobias Adrian from the IMF role at the end of August 2026, leaving the position vacant since September 1, 2026. Schnabel’s exit adds to a period of significant leadership turnover at the ECB. Chief Economist Philip Lane is expected to leave in May 2027, and President Christine Lagarde’s term ends in October 2027.
The ECB will see three senior figures depart within a span of approximately ten months. Schnabel joined the ECB on January 1, 2020, and was known for her focus on price stability and opposition to premature rate cuts. Her new role at the IMF involves overseeing global financial system surveillance and advising member countries on banking regulation.
European governments are currently discussing potential candidates for the upcoming ECB vacancies. While the presidency remains the primary focus of these negotiations, it is expected that Schnabel’s successor on the Executive Board will be a German national, following the established informal system of national allocation for such appointments.
