Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, announced her resignation effective February 7, 2027. Her original eight-year term was scheduled to conclude on October 31, 2027. EU leaders are currently tasked with selecting her successor, with candidates such as Klaas Knot and Pablo Hernández de Cos under discussion.

Reports suggest Lagarde influenced Greece to reject Binance’s application for an EU-wide license, citing the exchange’s 2023 US money-laundering guilty plea and the development of the digital euro. Binance ceased accepting new European customers in July, while competitor Coinbase continues operations using a license issued in Luxembourg.

The regulatory landscape remains complex as the European Commission proposed transferring crypto licensing authority to the European Securities and Markets Authority in December 2025. While negotiations continue, Binance has stated its intention to pursue licensing through an alternative EU member state.
