Discover Airlines has officially launched the first wide-body Airbus A330-300 featuring the AeroSHARK aerodynamic coating. The aircraft, which underwent modification in Dresden this August, successfully completed test flights before entering regular service with a flight to Florida.
AeroSHARK consists of a transparent film with microscopic ribs measuring approximately 50 micrometers in height. Applied to the fuselage and engine nacelles, this structure mimics shark skin to reduce aerodynamic drag. Developers estimate the technology decreases fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by about 1%.
While the reduction per flight is modest, it accumulates significantly over thousands of flight hours, lowering overall operating costs. The technology was developed by Lufthansa Technik and Surventis. Currently, the Lufthansa Group operates 23 aircraft equipped with AeroSHARK, achieving a combined daily fuel saving of over 20 tons.
