Airbus is closely monitoring the progress of the Chinese manufacturer COMAC, which is increasingly challenging the dominance of established industry leaders. Lars Wagner, head of Airbus's commercial aircraft division, stated that the rise of the Chinese aviation industry is now a regular topic of internal discussions within the company.

The European manufacturer is particularly focused on COMAC's significant investments in production capacity, robotics, and automation. Furthermore, COMAC is actively working to reduce its reliance on Western components for its C919 passenger jet, which competes directly with the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 models.

In its 2025 annual report, Airbus officially recognized COMAC as a growing competitor, noting that the long-standing duopoly of Airbus and Boeing in the narrow-body aircraft market has effectively ended. The company emphasized that China's ability to execute its strategic five-year plans is a key factor in this shift.

Despite these developments, Airbus does not anticipate an immediate market takeover by Chinese aircraft. COMAC still faces the challenges of scaling production, obtaining necessary certifications, and establishing a robust service network. Airbus expects the most significant competitive pressure from the Chinese manufacturer to emerge in the 2030s.
