Deng Chenghao, Chairman of Deepal Auto, recently addressed the industry's use of the L3 classification. He stated that many products claiming L3 capabilities are merely using the term for marketing purposes. According to him, true L3 autonomy requires the system to assume responsibility for driving tasks, which necessitates strict standards for vehicle capability, safety verification, and operational scope.
The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology previously granted the first batch of L3 conditional autonomous driving permits to two electric vehicle models. These vehicles are currently undergoing pilot programs in designated areas of Beijing and Chongqing, marking a shift from testing to commercial application.
The Changan SC7000AAARBEV model is permitted for single-lane autonomous driving in traffic congestion at speeds up to 50 km/h. Its operational area is restricted to specific sections of the inner ring expressways and Yudu Avenue in Chongqing.
The Arcfox BJ7001A61NBEV model is authorized for single-lane autonomous driving on highways and urban expressways at speeds up to 80 km/h. Its usage is currently limited to specific segments of the Beijing-Taiwan Expressway, Airport North Line Expressway, and Daxing Airport Expressway.
