ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), currently the leading DRAM manufacturer in China, is reportedly planning to expand into the NAND flash memory market. According to recent reports, the company intends to establish a dedicated research and development production line for NAND flash at its new facility located in Beijing.

To support these efforts, CXMT has opened a research institute in the capital city. The company has already initiated discussions regarding these plans with potential customers, including a startup focused on storage solutions for artificial intelligence and supercomputing applications.

This strategic move positions CXMT to compete directly with global industry leaders such as Samsung, as well as its domestic competitor YMTC, which currently holds the third position in global NAND shipments. Historically, the two Chinese companies have operated in distinct market segments.

The competitive landscape is shifting as both firms explore new areas. Earlier this year, reports indicated that YMTC began distributing low-power DRAM samples to clients. While both companies remain behind larger international rivals, they have gained pricing leverage due to current market shortages.

In July, CXMT reportedly priced its 64 GB DDR5 server modules higher than those offered by Samsung. Despite these developments, it remains unclear when the new R&D line will become operational or if the company plans to transition from trial production to large-scale manufacturing in the near future.
