Chinese semiconductor manufacturer CXMT is expanding its operations into the NAND flash memory market. The company plans to establish a research center in Beijing to develop these technologies and intends to install an experimental production line at a new facility in the capital.
This strategic move aims to diversify the company's portfolio, mirroring the business models of global industry leaders like Samsung and Micron, which produce both DRAM and NAND. CXMT has reportedly initiated discussions regarding its NAND plans with potential clients, including a startup.
The decision comes amid a global shortage of NAND memory. Industry experts from TrendForce anticipate that supply conditions in the NAND segment will remain constrained until the second half of 2027, partly due to manufacturers prioritizing DRAM and HBM production.
The competitive landscape in China is shifting as companies expand into each other's traditional segments. YMTC, previously focused on NAND, has reportedly begun testing LPDDR memory. Furthermore, both CXMT and YMTC are actively pursuing the development of HBM for AI computing.
