Chinese smartphone manufacturers are currently testing steel-cased and laminated battery technologies for their upcoming flagship devices. Industry reports suggest that these new power cells could potentially reach a capacity of 10,000 mAh. Due to higher production costs, this technology will initially be reserved for primary flagship models, while sub-brands will continue to utilize traditional pouch battery designs.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max has already integrated a steel-cased battery, which offers a capacity of 5,391 mAh in the Chinese market. This represents the highest capacity ever achieved in a standard iPhone model. Compared to conventional aluminum-plastic pouch batteries, the steel-cased alternative provides improved structural integrity, better heat dissipation, and higher energy density.

The rigid steel casing offers superior protection against physical impact and vibration, reducing the risk of deformation or swelling. Furthermore, the material enhances thermal conductivity, allowing for more efficient heat management during high-performance tasks. The design also improves space utilization within the device and simplifies the battery replacement process, aligning with new European Union regulations.
