The S4000 system, a tethered aerostat platform measuring 67 by 40 by 23 meters, underwent its first urban flight test in Yueyang, Hunan Province, on November 6. The platform uses helium to lift lightweight generator modules to altitudes of up to 4,000 meters, transmitting power to the ground via cable.
The system generates output voltage ranging from 10 to 35 kV and is designed for a 20-year service life. During the recent urban trials, developers focused on verifying the integration of the generators with the power grid and ensuring the stability of the aerostat while operating near buildings and people.
Previously, in August, the S4000 completed comprehensive testing at a range in northwest China, where it was evaluated at an altitude of 4,000 meters under extreme temperature fluctuations and high ultraviolet radiation. Following the successful urban demonstration, the team plans to move toward formal certification.
