Chinese automakers are currently developing new cars in about two years, while Western brands typically take three to five years. According to IAT Automobile Technology and the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, AI could further reduce this cycle to 18 months.

Western companies are adopting Chinese methods to speed up production. Renault developed the Twingo E-Tech in China in 21 months, and Volkswagen, in partnership with Xpeng, created the ID.UNYX in 24 months.

Chinese regulators are concerned that rapid development may compromise safety and durability. Authorities have launched a year-long safety campaign with unannounced inspections and proposed rules to double mandatory road testing for new-energy vehicles to 30,000 km (18,600 miles).

Some industry leaders, such as Chery Vice President Li Xueyong, acknowledge that certain development timelines cannot be shortcut. However, Geely Chairman Li Shufu told CCTV that slowing down is unrealistic due to intense competition and consumer demand for frequent updates.
