In August, China saw a rise in sales of pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs), while sales for all vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines declined. Overall retail car sales in the country fell by 23.6% year-over-year.

New energy vehicles (NEVs) saw a 10.1% decline in retail sales, though their market share increased to 65.2% from 55.2% a year ago. Meanwhile, Chinese NEV exports surged by 154.7%, with NEVs accounting for 58.4% of total car exports.

Tesla experienced a 12.4% year-over-year drop in Chinese retail sales, marking its weakest August since 2022. The company placed 6th in the market with 50 000 units delivered, while BYD led with 233 000 deliveries and Geely followed with 110 000.

Despite the domestic retail slump, Tesla's exports from its Shanghai factory grew by 38.7%. This growth rate remains significantly lower than the 154.7% export increase recorded by the broader Chinese NEV industry.
