Chery chairman and president Yin Tongyue issued a formal apology following a safety incident in Malaysia involving a detached rear axle on an Omoda 5. The event, which occurred on October 6 in Johor Bahru, triggered a regulatory investigation by the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ).
On October 11, the JPJ temporarily suspended the Vehicle Type Approval for the Omoda 5, halting new registrations to assess safety risks. The regulatory audit focuses on production processes, quality control systems, and component suppliers. Chery has initiated a recall covering 8,878 vehicles of the C and H variants.
The company stated it will inspect the recalled vehicles and replace components free of charge if necessary. Owners are advised to verify their vehicle identification numbers through the official Chery Malaysia portal. The newer Chery O5 model, introduced in September 2025, features a multi-link rear suspension and is not affected by this action.
This recall follows a separate 2024 campaign involving 600 Omoda 5 units, which Chery attributed to a supplier equipment calibration error. The company emphasizes that the current investigation is distinct from the previous case. Yin Tongyue noted that Chery remains committed to long-term market development and regulatory compliance.
