The AI model known as Astra, identified as ChatGPT-6 Astra, successfully decrypted a 1941 Enigma-coded message in two days. Researchers noted that this task typically requires weeks or months of human effort. The system independently selected the encrypted message labeled Nr. 172, MVUEH, from the Crypto Cellar Research website for analysis.
Astra autonomously developed Python and C++ software to create an Enigma simulator and an Enigma Bombe to facilitate the decryption process. The model hypothesized that the message contained the repeated phrase ROSENOW ROSENOW. The resulting plaintext confirmed the hypothesis, revealing a radio message regarding march route instructions.
The decrypted 82-letter cipher revealed a message containing a spelling error at the beginning. This achievement follows a recent report where the same model successfully cracked a 108-year-old German code from World War I that utilized the ADFGVX encryption method. Researchers are currently reviewing system logs to understand the model's methodology.
