CATL introduced the Tectrans II battery system for heavy-duty commercial vehicles at the IAA Transportation trade fair. The solution supports a range of up to 1,000 km and allows for an 80 percent charge in 25 minutes using megawatt-level fast charging.

The battery features a gravimetric energy density of 170 Wh/kg, which is 13 percent higher than the industry average. This density allows for an additional payload of 0.6 tonnes. The system is designed for a service life of 12 years or 1.5 million kilometers with 70 percent capacity retention.

Tectrans II is compatible with medium-duty trucks and buses, offering flexible installation options including underbody, roof, or swappable configurations. The design uses standardized modules and interfaces to facilitate future battery upgrades without requiring major platform changes.

CATL is expanding its battery-swapping operations to Europe through a partnership with Octopus Energy. The company also signed a letter of intent with DHL Group to develop green freight corridors, focusing on energy storage, management platforms, and charging infrastructure.
