Tom Anthony launched an open-source project called YourOwnWeigh to bypass the Withings Plus subscription requirement for syncing health data. The tool reroutes data from Withings servers to a user-configured destination, enabling free wireless synchronization with third-party platforms.
The web application functions by using Bluetooth to update Withings scales with modified firmware. It imports existing user profiles and settings while downloading health metrics. The software downloads and patches the necessary firmware files rather than hosting them directly.
Users can host the application on their own servers or utilize a free CloudFlare account due to the minimal data requirements. For integration with Apple Health, Anthony developed a scheduled automation using Apple Shortcuts to pull data from the alternative server.
Currently, the project supports only two older Withings scale models. Anthony anticipates that the community may develop methods to extend compatibility to other platforms like Google Health and potentially adapt the firmware patching process for newer hardware.
