Inquir Compute has evolved from a serverless function platform into a comprehensive PaaS. The system now supports containerized applications, databases, and background tasks alongside its original FaaS capabilities.
The developer opted to build a custom orchestrator rather than using Kubernetes or Nomad. This decision allows for a unified resource model that integrates long-running applications and serverless functions within a single infrastructure.
The custom architecture includes an allocation plane, a scheduler, and compute runners based on containerd. This design enables the platform to manage resource distribution, binpacking, and reservations while directly linking infrastructure usage to the product's billing model.
The system is divided into several components: the Control Plane (Node.js and PostgreSQL), App and Function Controllers, the Allocation Plane, Compute Runners, and a Gateway for traffic management.
By treating functions as shadow applications within the same allocation layer, the platform simplifies the management of different workload lifecycles. This approach allows for independent development of placement policies and user-facing service models.
