The project involves creating an interactive electronic book for children using an ESP32-P4 microcontroller. The device features an IPS display with a resolution of 1024x600, 32 MB of PSRAM, 16 MB of Flash, and a microSD card slot. The hardware is designed to handle graphics, animations, and sound playback without the distractions of standard tablets.
The book features a non-linear narrative structure with 4 decision points, resulting in 16 possible endings and 31 total scenes. The content, including text and visual prompts for AI generation, was developed with the assistance of ChatGPT. The developer noted that using LLMs helped manage the significant volume of text and image descriptions required for the project.
The choice of the ESP32-P4 platform was driven by the presence of a Pixel Processing Accelerator and a hardware JPEG decoder, which facilitate efficient image processing. The developer emphasized that the device functions as a dedicated, self-contained unit, avoiding the need for internet connectivity or software updates that might distract a child.
The developer plans to release the source code in upcoming articles, following the initial publication of the binary firmware. The project aims to serve as a template for creating similar interactive educational tools, with the developer encouraging others to build and share their own versions of such digital stories.
