The ESP32-S3 microcontroller, priced at approximately 2 USD, features a dual-core processor with a frequency of up to 240 MHz. It includes integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy modules.
The developer implemented an accelerated FAST corner detector using the chip's 128-bit SIMD instructions. This implementation processes QVGA frames (320x240) in approximately 6 ms.
The optimization increased the performance of the FAST detector to 11.2 megapixels per second, compared to 5.1 megapixels per second in the reference implementation, achieving a 2.2x speedup.
To overcome hardware limitations, the developer used specific techniques: handling unaligned data reads via register manipulation and converting unsigned 8-bit pixel values to signed format using an XOR 0x80 operation.
