The pre-seed funding round was led by BlueYard Capital. Other investors included OVNI Capital, Antler, S20, Script Capital, and several business angels from General Intuition and other tech firms. The startup was established by Michiel Voortman, Laurentiu Ciobanu, and Hidde Kehrer.
Boxd develops cloud infrastructure providing virtual machines for developers and AI coding agents. The platform supports parallel execution of code, testing, and workflow management. Unlike traditional setups, the system allows for snapshotting and live-forking, enabling copies of running machines to be created in under 100 milliseconds.
The company utilizes a simplified virtualization architecture that focuses on CPU, RAM, storage, and networking. By omitting emulation for hardware like webcams or USB ports, Boxd aims to reduce the software attack surface. This design provides hardware-isolated persistent virtual machines to mitigate security risks.
The fresh capital will be directed toward team expansion and the ongoing development of the company's custom virtualization engine. Boxd intends to scale its infrastructure to meet the rising demand for dedicated computing environments required by autonomous AI coding agents.
