BMW Italy President and CEO Sergio Solero confirmed that the next-generation BMW 3 Series, codenamed G50, will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This decision aligns with the company's Power of Choice strategy, which aims to provide customers with various engine options.
While specific technical details for the G50 remain undisclosed, the model is expected to build upon the current 330e platform. The outgoing G20 330e utilizes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 19.5 kWh battery, delivering 292 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque.
Current WLTP testing for the 330e shows an electric-only range of up to 101 km, with the xDrive version reaching 96 km. Expectations suggest the new generation will improve upon these figures through enhanced battery technology and platform efficiency, though official specifications are not yet public.
Regarding diesel options, BMW will discontinue the M340d as the B57 engine will not be carried over to the new series. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder B47 engine is expected to be the sole diesel variant available for the eighth-generation 3 Series.
The official global debut of the new 3 Series is scheduled for the end of September. Production will take place at the BMW Dingolfing plant in Germany shortly after the unveiling. BMW also plans to introduce the i3 Touring (NA1) and potentially a gasoline-powered 3 Series Touring model.
