Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos, has unveiled Power Tower, a foldable solar power system designed for lunar bases. The structure stands approximately 20 meters tall and is capable of generating over 10 kW of electricity. The system is intended for deployment at the Moon's south pole, where its height helps overcome shadows caused by the terrain.
The modular design allows for the creation of distributed energy networks to power habitats, scientific equipment, and other infrastructure. Transported in a folded state by a lander, the tower automatically extends its mast and deploys solar panels upon arrival. This technology is part of NASA's broader efforts to establish long-term infrastructure under the Artemis program.
The company successfully tested the deployment process on Earth on July 22, 2026. The Power Tower project builds upon the earlier Lunar Array Mast and Power System (LAMPS) developed by Honeybee Robotics, a subsidiary of Blue Origin. Honeybee Robotics previously conducted tests for LAMPS at NASA's Johnson Space Center in 2024 and participated in the Vertical Solar Array Technology (VSAT) program.
