Seven companies accounted for over 50% of total U.S. seed and growth-stage venture investment during the first 10 months of the year. These firms, including OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Anduril Industries, Databricks, Prometheus, and The Boring Co., secured more than $260 billion in equity funding.

The leadership of these startups often consists of individuals with net worths exceeding $1 billion. Elon Musk, who founded xAI and The Boring Co., and Jeff Bezos, who launched the AI startup Prometheus, are among the wealthiest figures involved. Prometheus raised $12 billion this year, while Bezos holds a net worth estimated at over $350 billion.

Other major players include Databricks, valued at approximately $190 billion following an August financing round, with CEO Ali Ghodsi holding a reported net worth of $7.6 billion. Anduril Industries, valued at $61 billion, is led by Brian Schimpf, whose net worth is estimated at $1.5 billion, and co-founder Palmer Luckey, with an estimated $5.9 billion.

The funding landscape has shifted significantly since 2013, when the term unicorn first gained prominence. Previously, founders typically achieved billionaire status only after IPOs or acquisitions. Currently, a majority of venture capital is directed toward companies already valued at levels that grant stakeholders billionaire status or are led by established billionaires.
