Australia is seeing a shift in investment focus as capital flows toward AI data centers instead of renewable energy projects. The proposed pipeline for data center investments in the country is valued at approximately AUD 150 billion.

Data centers currently consume about 3 TWh of electricity, accounting for 2–5% of the National Electricity Market demand. The Australian Energy Market Operator projects this share could rise to 10–13% by the mid-2030s.

Renewable energy projects face challenges in securing long-term power purchase agreements, with only about 6% of approved wind and solar projects having such contracts as of 2026.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on July 15, 2026, that large data centers will be legally required to support new renewable generation. Legislation to enforce this net-generator policy is expected in 2027.
