Apple has unveiled the S11 SiP, the core processor for the new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. The chip is derived from the 2nm A20 Pro architecture used in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo. It features two high-efficiency CPU cores, a single-core GPU, and a four-core neural engine designed for on-device machine learning.
The S11 chip enables significantly higher data sampling rates for health monitoring. Heart rate sampling now occurs every 5 seconds, which is 60 times more frequent than previous models. Additionally, heart rate variability (HRV) is monitored every 5 minutes. These metrics power the new Readiness score and health insights within watchOS 27.
The chip also powers Audio Intelligence, a system that uses local neural networks to identify environmental sounds like doorbells or fire alarms. It provides haptic alerts for the hearing impaired and supports offline audio transcription and summarization. All processing occurs within the chip's secure enclave to ensure user privacy.
By integrating the A20 Pro architecture into a wearable platform, Apple aims to transition the Apple Watch from a notification device to an independent terminal capable of continuous health tracking and AI-driven situational awareness. This move marks a shift in how Apple bridges the gap between smartphone and wearable chip technologies.
