Apple has updated its App Store guidelines to explicitly prohibit applications that utilize artificial intelligence to generate non-consensual sexually explicit imagery. Under the new rule 2.5.19, developers are required to implement active measures to prevent the creation and distribution of such deepfake content.
The policy change specifically targets deceptive practices where developers hide prohibited features during the App Store review process, only to enable them later. Companies found engaging in this behavior face removal from the App Store and potential expulsion from the Apple Developer Program.
This update follows previous enforcement actions, including a warning issued to xAI regarding the Grok chatbot. The company was required to implement safety protections against deepfake generation before Apple approved its updated version. The new standards now apply across all application categories.
Furthermore, Apple has extended its existing prohibitions against applications facilitating human trafficking and child exploitation to include alternative app marketplaces. These measures aim to standardize safety requirements across the entire ecosystem.
