Apple has updated the App Store Review Guidelines, specifically clause 4.3 (b), to address the proliferation of low-quality software. The company intends to remove existing applications that have not received updates or fail to maintain user engagement.
The policy targets categories such as dating apps, flashlights, wallpapers, sound effects, simple timers, and fortune-telling tools. New submissions in these categories will be rejected unless developers can demonstrate significant improvements or unique user experiences.
Furthermore, Apple has expanded its ban to include vulgar content, specifically citing drinking games, guides based on the Kama Sutra, and apps that simulate bodily functions like flatulence or burping. The company stated these apps lack value and require minimal development effort.
Developers who repeatedly submit low-quality applications face stricter consequences, including the potential revocation of their developer privileges. This move aims to improve the overall quality of the App Store ecosystem.
