Apple has decided to indefinitely suspend plans to reduce its AppleCare support staff. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the company had previously considered cutting approximately 5,000 customer service positions by the summer of 2026, citing the potential for AI agents to handle phone and online support tasks.
Despite shelving the layoffs, Apple is integrating generative AI into its support infrastructure. In the United States and Canada, users calling the AppleCare hotline may now be routed to an AI-powered virtual assistant. This system is designed to answer product-related queries and provide step-by-step troubleshooting instructions.
The current implementation allows for human intervention when necessary. If the AI assistant cannot resolve a specific issue, it transfers the caller to a live support agent. Additionally, customers retain the option to request a human representative at any point during their interaction with the automated system.
