Apple is reportedly developing an enterprise server featuring its upcoming M8 Ultra chips. The project, which began a year ago under the leadership of John Ternus, is considering two configurations that would house either two or four of these processors. The company is also in discussions with Nvidia regarding the potential integration of NVLink Fusion networking technology into the server architecture.

The initiative follows a surge in demand for Mac mini and Mac Studio devices among AI developers. Companies such as OpenAI have reportedly acquired tens of thousands of these machines for reinforcement learning tasks, while Anthropic has utilized Mac mini instances via Amazon Web Services. This trend has influenced Apple's strategy to expand its presence in the enterprise hardware market.

If finalized, this project would represent Apple's return to the server sector for the first time since the discontinuation of the Xserve line in January 2011. John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook as CEO on September 1, oversees the development. The project remains subject to change, including the possibility of cancellation or the exclusion of Nvidia components.

Despite the potential for growth, the company faces significant supply chain hurdles. The global shortage of memory chips, driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centers, continues to impact the industry. This scarcity has already caused price increases across various consumer electronics, including flagship smartphones and gaming hardware, affecting Apple's broader product lineup.
