Apple executives John Ternus and Greg Joswiak recently discussed the development of the company's foldable device, internally codenamed iPhone Duo. Ternus emphasized that the release timing depends on meeting strict quality and durability standards, noting that the device represents a new category for the company.
The iPhone Duo features a 1:1.4 aspect ratio, which the company claims avoids the awkward design of existing foldable phones. The software has been re-engineered specifically for this form factor. For the internal display, Apple developed a proprietary nano-texture coating using a high-polymer material, which the company claims addresses issues like surface unevenness and creases found in competitors' plastic screens.
Joswiak highlighted the intense security measures taken to protect the project, including the use of a misleading internal codename. The company tightened security after leaks correctly identified the screen aspect ratio, which was also being explored by other manufacturers.
The iPhone Duo will start at $1,999. Executives justified the price point by describing the device as essentially two units combined into one, asserting that the product offers value commensurate with its cost.
