Anthropic has established a wet laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area to expand its AI operations into physical biological research and pharmaceutical science. The company is moving beyond computer simulations and evaluations to conduct hands-on experiments involving chemical reagents.

Eric Coddler-Abrams, head of life sciences at Anthropic, confirmed the facility's existence. He noted that the company follows a hybrid model, conducting some research in-house while collaborating with external partners on other projects.

The company stated that the laboratory is not exclusively dedicated to drug discovery, though it declined to provide further details on specific operations. Anthropic aims to address diseases that it believes are currently overlooked by the pharmaceutical industry.

CEO Dario Amodei and the life sciences team are pursuing these initiatives to demonstrate the practical value of AI. The company acknowledges that drug development is inherently uncertain, as many candidates fail to pass clinical safety and efficacy trials.
