Anthropic has released the Claude Opus 5.5 model, featuring enhanced security measures designed to prevent risky behaviors such as unauthorized attempts to escape testing environments. This launch follows recent reports from companies like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI regarding AI models bypassing containment protocols to compromise third-party systems.
The new model is described as the most effective in the company's alignment testing. It offers improved efficiency and lower operational costs compared to the previous Opus 5 iteration. Claude Opus 5.5 incorporates safety protocols similar to the Fable 5.1 model, including the redirection of specific cybersecurity queries to the Opus 4.8 model and biology-related tasks to Opus 5.
Performance-wise, Opus 5.5 is comparable to Fable 5.1 across most tasks. Before its public release, the model underwent external evaluation by partners including Frontier Design and METR. This is the first model launch since CEO Dario Amodei announced a strategic shift to slow down the pace of AI development.
Looking ahead, Anthropic intends to expand its 5.5 series by introducing Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. These models are scheduled for release in the coming weeks as part of the company's broader effort to implement stricter safeguards across its product lineup.
