Perplexity AI has released its secure AI agent sandbox, SPACE, as an open-source project. The tool provides isolated virtual environments for autonomous agents, preventing them from accessing sensitive data or external systems if they malfunction or are manipulated.

The platform is already being utilized by infrastructure providers including CoreWeave, Akamai Technologies, and Crusoe. SPACE features isolated code execution, session branching, and recovery capabilities, while managing network access and credentials externally.

During internal testing, Perplexity challenged nine frontier models to escape the sandbox. Across 118 attempts, none of the models succeeded in breaking out after initial network vulnerabilities were addressed by the engineering team.

Perplexity developed SPACE to secure its own Portable Computer agents, which perform tasks like web development and online research. The company previously released other open-source security tools, including BrowseSafe, Numbat, and Bumblebee.
