Anthropic, the developer of Claude AI, has entered into discussions with New York City Comptroller Mark Levine. This follows a request from Levine, sent around October 14–15, 2026, urging the company to postpone its planned initial public offering.
Levine, who oversees pension funds with total assets exceeding $325 billion, expressed concerns regarding AI safety, governance, and the pace of technology development. He suggested that an IPO might distract the company from critical risk mitigation efforts.
The NYC pension funds hold an exposure of approximately $7 million in Anthropic through private equity. Despite this relatively small stake, the company established communication with the comptroller's office by October 16, 2026.
Anthropic confidentially filed for its IPO in June 2026 and is reportedly targeting a public listing as early as November 2026. The company reported Q3 2026 revenue of $16.8 billion, with potential IPO valuations reaching up to $2 trillion discussed.
As of now, no changes to the IPO timeline have been publicly announced. Anthropic operates as a public benefit corporation, a structure intended to balance shareholder interests with broader societal goals.
