Andreessen Horowitz has rebranded its digital-asset division, a16z Crypto, to a16z Frontier. Managing partner Chris Dixon announced the change on October 22, 2026, stating that the firm is expanding its investment mandate beyond crypto to include long-horizon technologies, such as AI-native applications and autonomous systems.
Despite the shift in focus, the firm confirmed it will continue to invest in cryptocurrency and related sectors, while maintaining its advocacy for regulatory frameworks in the US. The transition coincides with a change in leadership, as founding general partner Ali Yahya is departing the firm to launch his own venture.
The rebranding follows a period of reduced fundraising activity for the division. The team's latest fund secured $2.2 billion, which is significantly lower than the $4.5 billion raised in 2022. In total, the team has raised approximately $10 billion across five funds since its inception in 2018.
