AMD and Xbox have announced an expansion of their partnership in graphics technology. The FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 4.1 technology is set to arrive on the Xbox ecosystem, starting with the ROG Xbox Ally handheld console. Following this, the technology will be integrated into the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles, although specific release dates for the console versions have not yet been disclosed.
The collaboration between the two companies encompasses a broad range of technologies, including chips for Xbox and Windows hardware, DirectX, Advanced Shader Delivery, and AutoSR. Scott Van Vliet, CTO of Xbox, stated that the teams are working on optimizing FSR 4.1 to provide developers with tools that balance performance and visual quality. The companies intend to continue their joint efforts across both hardware and software domains.
Looking toward future hardware, AMD confirmed that the next-generation Xbox project, codenamed Project Helix, will utilize a new technology called FSR Diamond. AMD has not provided details regarding the specific features, hardware specifications, or the expected launch timeline for the Project Helix console. The impact of these technologies on gaming performance and game support remains to be seen in future updates.
AMD noted that its research into FSR upscaling is partially rooted in the Project Amethyst collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment. This initiative focused on integrating advanced graphics rendering with machine learning. The results of this research serve as the foundation for FSR 4.1 on Radeon RX 6000, RX 7000, and RX 9000 series GPUs, as well as spectral super-resolution technologies used on PlayStation 5.
