AMD is extending its supply chain planning horizon from one to two years to three to five years due to the high demand for AI-related hardware. CEO Lisa Su visited South Korea and Taiwan in early October 2026 to secure long-term agreements with memory manufacturers.

The company plans to significantly increase supply in 2027 to address HBM shortages, which are projected to continue through 2028. A key element of this strategy is a memorandum of understanding signed on March 18, 2026, designating Samsung as the priority supplier for HBM4 memory.

Samsung began shipping HBM4 in February 2026. These components are intended for AMD's Instinct MI455X AI accelerators and EPYC Venice server processors. The partnership between the two companies spans nearly two decades.

SK Hynix remains a critical player in the sector, holding a market share of approximately 57-58% in the HBM segment. While SK Hynix primarily supplies Nvidia, AMD continues to monitor the market to mitigate risks associated with its reliance on Samsung's production lines.
