Amazon has updated its entry-level 6-inch Kindle, which now starts at $169.99 for the 16GB plastic model. The device is 11% lighter and 14% thinner than the 2024 version, weighing 140g and measuring 6.85mm in thickness. An aluminum version with 32GB of storage is available for $189.99.
The 2026 basic Kindle features a new flush-front screen design. Amazon has implemented a capacitive touch dead zone to prevent accidental inputs when users rest their fingers on the screen edges. The device also offers 30% faster book opening speeds compared to the 2024 model.
Compared to the 2019 basic Kindle, the new model includes USB-C, increased storage options of 16GB or 32GB, and a screen resolution of 300 ppi. The battery life is rated for up to 6 weeks. The device lacks features found in premium models, such as warm light, auto-adjusting brightness, color display, and waterproofing.
The price of the new Kindle lineup has increased by $40 to $50 across all models, which Amazon attributes to the global memory-chip shortage. While the basic Kindle is the most affordable option, users seeking advanced features like warm light or waterproofing may consider the Kindle Paperwhite, which starts at $199.99.
