French company Alice&Bob has completed the first phase of the state-backed PROQCIMA program. The initiative aims to develop two universal quantum computers, each featuring 1000 logical qubits, by 2032.
During the initial stage, Alice&Bob tested three quantum processing units, including two 6-qubit chips and one 12-qubit chip. The team demonstrated key operations, such as CNOT gates between cat qubits and non-Clifford gates.
The PROQCIMA program is overseen by the French defense ministry and involves five companies: Alice&Bob, Pasqal, Quandela, Quobly, and C12. The first phase focused on verifying the feasibility of each participant's technology.
In May 2026, France increased the program's target from 128 to 1000 logical qubits and boosted overall funding. Future stages will narrow the field to three technologies, eventually selecting two for prototype development.
