Akai is preparing to launch the MPC Sample Key, a device that features open-source firmware. The company has provided early access to developers to encourage the creation of custom modifications and firmware tweaks. Unlike the MPC Key 37, this new model lacks pads, relying on keys for sample playback.

Demonstrations shared by the company show the device running various synthesizers, including Native Instruments Massive, as well as virtual analog and FM synths. Some modifications even feature entirely custom operating systems. These community-driven features are also appearing on the standard MPC Sample model.

CEO Jack O’Donnell confirmed that inMusic brands, including Akai, intend to support the modding community. The company plans to distribute early hardware to developers, release software under open-source licenses, and provide an official SDK to facilitate further development on the platform.
